Understanding the Money in Cambodia

Money in cambodia. What currency is used in cambodia

“What is the best currency to use in Cambodia” was the first thing i googled when I was traveling to Siem Reap. You would think it’s pretty simple, but the Cambodian currency is actually a little more unique.  In this post I will go into a little more detail about understanding the money in Cambodia.

Spoiler alert: Yes, you want to carry cash in Cambodia.

Be sure to check out my guide for what to expect on your 3 day trip to Siem Reap.

What is the Currency in Cambodia?

The Cambodian Riel is the national currency. As far as money goes, it’s pretty cool looking to be honest. The values are high enough to make the average tourist panic and fumble their cash while buying street food.

Why? because 4,000 KHR = $1 USD, but you’ll have no problem adjusting to it.

You’re going to think this next part is a trick, but don’t worry it’s not.

What Currency is Used in Cambodia?

Cambodia does not just use the Riel, they actually use duel currencies. You will be able to spend KHR AND USD.  In fact, your hotel is required to give you the USD value.

They are essentially used together. For the most part, vendors will say “This costs 20,000 Riel or 5 dollars” . If it costs 20,000 Riel and you pay with a $20 bill, you will likely receive  60,000 Riel back instead of dollars. Make sense?

This is an important part: You may have an issue spending your USD if it is damaged or ripped, so keep that in mind. They MAY refuse it.

You might also run into an issue with large bills. Change for $100 might be quite difficult, I personally had to use my hotel’s concierge. Use your best judgement. If you are heading to the rural countryside, bring Riel of course.

What Currency Should You Bring To Cambodia?

The answer here is easy, you would want to bring US Dollars to Cambodia.

After getting your passport stamped, proceed to the currency exchange and swap out some USD to KHR. In my experience, you want to have both on you. I think long term, they would like to phase dollars out, but for now, you are fine.

Don’t have USD? You will have no issues using an ATM like you would in any other country. Their ATMs spit out USD as well.

Are Cards Used in Cambodia?

I think the only way to answer that would be “ehhhhh”. Of course your local Hyatt, Marriot, or other hotel will accept card. Maybe some nicer restaurants or shops. Ask around, if they say “yes”, then take advantage and save some of your cash.

Cash is king here, so come prepared. Side note, I’m not sure how people always run into problems at a foreign ATM. Ive never told my bank I was traveling and my card has always worked? Sorry for the rant.

Tipping in Camboda

Tips are not expected but they are appreciated, the locals will not be offended by your gesture. Mentioned in my Angkor Wat tips, your guide will deserve a bonus, trust me.

I was nervous about the tipping in Siem Reap because it’s such a tourist destination…but the people were incredible.

Of course there are some bad apples everywhere, but this country has been through a lot, if you are able to give a little extra, the Cambodia locals will be so grateful. The hospitality here is unmatched.

I hope by reading this you have a better understanding of money in Cambodia. It is a such an amazing place. Be sure to check out some of my other Cambodia tips
