Angkor Golf Resort Review – Golf in Cambodia Is Awesome

Golf in Cambodia at Angkor Golf Resort

People talk about golf in Asia all the time. Nobody really talks about golf in Cambodia though…let alone Siem Reap. I mean it makes sense becuase Angkor Wat is the main attraction (deservingly so). But what if I told you that Angkor Golf Resort is a MUST visit.

Let it be known before reading that I am a 90s golfer.

Verdict ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Most memorable round of golf I have ever played

After an incredible 2 days in Siem Reap, Cambodia, my buddy and I did not want a day off. So we asked the Park Hyatt Siem Reap if they could arrange a tee time at Angkor Golf Resort… “No problem” they said.

The course is an 18-hole, par-72 championship layout, with challenging fairways, tough water hazards, and LARGE greens….making it suitable for both professional and amateur golfers. Designed by renowned golfer Nick Faldo, this resort is KNOWN for its immaculate maintenance, excellent facilities, and exceptional service. Which is now officially confirmed after seeing it with my own eyes.

Arriving At Angkor Golf Resort

At 7am our tuktuk driver dropped us off at the course entrance and the friendly staff drove us up into the clubhouse to get situated. It was an incredible day to be in Cambodia. The sun was shining and it was unbearably hot…but we had the place to ourselves.

We showed up with nothing. No clubs, no shoes, no shirt, no golf balls….nothing. So we rented everything, and then bought a shirt to keep. There 3 lovely girls showed us to the locker room and we changed. The locker room was spotless and was filled with everything you would expect out of a Faldo course.

We proceeded outside and were met with our 2 caddies. I have never had a caddy before so this was going to be a new experience. I don’t remember their names but they were hilarious and knew EVERYTHING about the course. They were in all long sleeves and holding umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun, which is something you don’t see in America. We then separated into our caddies carts and took off.

THE BUNKER HOLE

As we approached the gigantic practice green, I looked at my friend and said “these greens are incredible”. They were perfect. We could practice as long as we wanted considering there was nobody else on this pristine golf course. After getting warmed up and getting to know our “guides” for the day, we were off to play the best golf course in Cambodia.

It could have been because of the vibes, because of the caddies, or because of the newest Cobra clubs….but we were absolutely dialed. Hitting every fairway was not something I am used to.

The course was in immaculate condition, so that definitely helped my low flight drives.

My caddy was the real deal. She would even hold an umbrella over me if I was standing idle in the sun. I turned it down…but the gesture was very nice. She said many of the asian golfers enjoy that part of service. Even after 1 hole she knew exactly what club to give me. I never asked, she just handed me my 7-iron, it was awesome. Not only that, she told me the reads on every single putt. Which makes sense….if you constantly play these greens, you eventually know them all.

Holes were flying by and this was easily the most memorable golf round of my life.

It was already time for a beer, to in which the concession stand had a plethora of options (these were not free). I grabbed an Angkor Beer, a Cambodia Beer, and a Pocari Sweat. If you’re new to Cambodia, get the Cambodia Beer with the pull off tab. Trust me, they are the best.

Golfing in cambodia at Angkor Golf Resort

The course was not as easy as you would expect. From par 3s over water to par 5s with 10 fairways bunkers, it was a challenge. But like I said, it is maintained VERY well and it’s such a vibrant green course.

The round was coming to an end and on 18 I had a putt for an 89. Absolute choke job….both of the caddies laughed at me after initially hyping me up.

Something I didn’t mention. As good as the caddies were, there was terrible downfall. They are STILL not back from the hit they took during COVID. With the current staff rotation, they would be lucky to work 1 round a week. It made me extremely sad so we tipped them as much as we could. I can’t stress enough how friendly and helpful they were on this fantastic day.

Update: I have heard things are much better now!

The green fee for 18 holes is $125 USD. On top of that you will pay a caddy fee of $12 USD, a golf cart is $28 USD, and club rental is $35 USD if you do not bring your own. My full day including drinks, a shirt, glove, and balls came to $311 USD before tip. For a Nick Faldo designed championship course in immaculate condition that is exceptional value compared to comparable courses in Asia.
Who designed Angkor Golf Resort? +
Angkor Golf Resort was designed by Nick Faldo, the six time major champion and one of the most respected golf course designers in the world. The course is an 18 hole par 72 championship layout with water hazards, large greens, and strategic bunkers. It is widely considered the best golf course in Cambodia.
Do I need to bring my own clubs to Angkor Golf Resort? +
No — club rental is available at the course for $35 USD. The rental clubs are Cobra which are excellent quality. You can also rent shoes and buy golf balls, gloves, and branded merchandise at the pro shop. You can show up with absolutely nothing and have a full round which is exactly what we did.
Is a caddy mandatory at Angkor Golf Resort? +
Yes — caddies are mandatory at Angkor Golf Resort. At $12 USD it is one of the best value additions to any round of golf anywhere. Your caddy knows every read on every green, will hand you the right club without being asked, and will keep you company throughout the round. Tip generously — the caddies are still recovering from the impact of COVID on tourism and a good tip goes a long way.
How do I get to Angkor Golf Resort from Siem Reap? +
The easiest way is by tuk tuk from central Siem Reap. The journey takes around 15 to 20 minutes depending on where you are staying. Your hotel can arrange this — the Park Hyatt booked everything for us including the tee time with a single request the evening before. Grab tuk tuk is also available if you want to book independently.
Is Angkor Golf Resort good for beginners? +
Yes — the course is challenging but very playable for amateur golfers. I am a 90s golfer and had the most enjoyable round of my life there. The caddy helps enormously with course management and the course is well maintained which makes the ball sit cleanly and predictably. Even if you are not a regular golfer the experience of playing a Nick Faldo course in Cambodia with a personal caddy is worth doing.
