Is Cambodia Safe For Travelers In 2026

Cambodia travel tips for 2026

Short answer: Yes. Cambodia is very safe for travelers…but you still need to use basic travel precautions.

Cambodia gets an unfair reputation. People hear “Khmer Rouge” and assume the country is still in chaos. It’s not. Millions of tourists visit every year without a single serious incident. The temples are insane, the food is reasonably priced, the people are some of the best in the world.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you felt safer here than your home country.

Here’s an honest breakdown of everything you need to know before booking your trip to Cambodia in 2026.

Is Cambodia Generally Safe?

Yes. Cambodia is considered a low-risk travel destination for tourists. The U.S. State Department has it at a Level 2 advisory (exercise increased caution)…the same rating as France, Germany, and dozens of other popular destinations.

When I went, I trusted some things I heard on the media. But after a little panic, I realized I was being an idiot…don’t be like me. Cambodia is now one of my favorite places.

The risks that do exist are largely manageable with common sense.

The Real Risks in Cambodia

Phone and bag snatching from moving scooters could happen, especially in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. I personally did not see one case of this, but in some cases…this is the #1 issue for tourists.

Like any other country, I wouldn’t just leave my phone on a chair. (Well, unless I’m in Saudi Arabia)

Use common sense. If you have survived Bangkok or Rome, then you’ll be fine.

Watch Out For Scams

There is always going to be a bad apple wherever you go. You could encounter a fake taxi price, fake charity offers, and other normal things.

If it feels off, just leave. Keep in mind, these people are just trying to survive…you can’t blame them for shooting their shot. You’re not going to be harmed or anything.

Be Careful of Natural Beauty

The history of Cambodia in intense to say the least. In Siem Reap especially, the roads might be in terrible conditions in some spots so be careful.

If you’re going “off-grid alone, make sure you don’t go wandering off in any random fields. Active landmines still exist, so you don’t want to see any of those outside of the Cambodia Landmine Museum.

Yes there are also snakes.

Is Cambodia Safe for Solo Male Travelers?

Absolutely. As someone who has ventured throughout Asia solo, I’d say there is no safer continent…and Cambodia is no exception.

As long as you stay away from drugs and shooting RPGs, I have to imagine you’ll be just fine.

Is Cambodia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

I personally can’t speak on this one. But Cambodia’s predominantly Buddhist culture usually means sexual harassment is far less common than in many other destinations. Women traveling alone regularly report feeling comfortable and safe here.

Solo female travelers consistently rate Cambodia as one of the more relaxed countries in Southeast Asia for women traveling alone.

That said, the usual rules apply: dress modestly (especially near temples), don’t walk alone late at night in unfamiliar areas, don’t leave drinks unattended, and stay at a safe place.

Essential Travel Tips For Cambodia

  • Make sure you have a SIM card (Airalo works)
  • Download Grab
  • Keep valuables safe
  • Share your itinerary with a friend
  • Dress appropriately in temples
  • Stick to marked trails to avoid landmines

Cambodia is one of the most rewarding destinations in Southeast Asia. The safety concerns are real but manageable…and no more daunting than dozens of other popular travel destinations. Solo travelers of all experience levels visit Cambodia every day without issue.

Do your homework, trust your instincts, and don’t let an inflated reputation keep you from one of the most incredible countries on the planet.
