Stay At The Hyatt Regency Kathmandu When It’s Back

The lobby of the Hyatt Regency in Kathmandu

I was fortunate enough to stay at the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu before the protests destroyed it. When the renovations are finished, be sure to stay there and support them if you are looking for a five star hotel in Nepal. Hopefully it will be ready by the end of 2026.

If it is not open by the time you are traveling to Nepal, The Hyatt Centric is also a fantastic option…just different.

Hyatt Regency Kathmandu Review

When arriving in Nepal, there is an airport shuttle that you can book. I highly recommend it. Witnessing the driving in Kathmandu for the first time was decently overwhelming. Tiny windy roads and tiny cars.

In such a busy and hectic city, the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu is a little oasis right in the middle. It just felt very cozy from the moment I arrived.

The staff was over the top friendly, and there was a calm vibe. For modern day Hyatt standards, you could say the rooms are “outdated”, but they are exactly how they should be in the Himalayas.

My View From The Room

You will immediately notice the wooden floors and the decor that just “feels right”. Similar to the Park Hyatt Siem Reap, that I will eventually make a post about.

The bathroom had a modern glass shower and bathtub. It was extremely spacious. I’m not sure about the other resorts near Kathmandu, but I was super happy with the bathroom.

Believe it or not, there is a casino there. That caught me off guard, I was not expecting that.

I headed down to the pool on this blistering hot day. The pool is crystal clear and has a FEW patios for you to enjoy beverages, hookahs, or whatever you want. There are restaurants galore, so don’t worry about that.

Every staff member was just so friendly, everybody says Namasteeeee and greets you as you pass.

Please note, the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu is located in the Boudha “district”, which means you are basically RIGHT NEXT to the Buddah Stupa. There is a hidden back gate that takes you directly to it. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OF THIS POST*. It’s a life changing gate.

Now, if you want to party in Thamel or visit the Monkey Temple…you use Uber. Nothing felt ‘far” when I was there. a 20 minute drive was nothing. If anything, it was relaxing to the be in the AC.

It was super easy to just “uber” everywhere or find a taxi, do not stress it.

Traffic can be hit or miss. They do not have traditional roads, so embrace yourself. If you are drunk, the windy roads might make you puke if you have a weak stomach.

And by the way, it’s not actually Uber in Nepal (which I write about here). You will have to download PATHAO or INDIRVE. Think of it like “Grab” in South East Asia. You will figure it out easily.

Staying here, you are also very close to the Pashupatinath Temple, which you should book a tour for.

Drinking water in Nepal is a minor issue. But the Hyatt Regency gave me literally 6 GIANT waters a day when they cleaned the room. I barely bought any water the entire stay, I just brought those bottles with me. Some say you can brush your teeth here, some say you can’t. Use your best judgment with that one.

You will see wildlife here. I will not be spoiling what you see.

Hyatt Regency Kathmandu Price

And drumroll…..the best part about staying at the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu is the price. I paid 3,500 Hyatt points, but I believe cash value was maybe 85 USD a night? If you are from the western world, this will not make sense to you. The cheapest hotel in your city is probably $250 a night right? This might be one of the best redemptions I’ve encountered.

The value, the pool, the location, the service, it was a fantastic stay.

An excellent property, and I hope Hyatt is able to fix it and get it up and running so their staff can work again. Everybody was so nice, so make sure you go and help them on when you see they are open.

What Happened To The Hyatt Regency Kathmandu

In September 2025, the Gen Z community took over. Literally. There were protests targeting at the elites, politicians, and just overall state of Nepal. They eventually turned violent, and the Hyatt suffered.

The Hyatt Regency Kathmandu was vandalized at lit fire to. The lobby, some rooms, the restaurants, etc.  There were some reports of looting as well.

They had to close indefinitely and suspend operations very shortly after.

Damage was so severe that staff had to be layed off as they rebuild this great property. That is why I am hoping it is fixed soon so hopefully people can get their jobs back.

There is no timeline for the renovations but I believe a year was the estimation.
